Verizon has today released drivers that will now allow their Pantech 4G LTE USB modem to support Mac OS X. Allowing Mac owners to now connect to the new 4G networks offering speeds averaging 12 Mbps and uploads around 2 Mbps.
Unfortunately the Verizon 4G modem drivers have only been released for the Pantech UML290 and not the LG VL600, the other LTE modem Verizon sells, which still only supports Windows systems at the moment.
This modem with its current version of drivers does not handle the switching well between LTE and 3G. It continually disconnects when it is in a marginal LTE signal area and switches to 3G. In order to get an acceptable connect experience you will need to force it to 3G only (contact Verizon for instructions) when you are in a suspect area. 3 devices without 64 bit support will not be supported on mac os x lion. The usb modem can be used to access the internet, your company s intranet, or you can use it to send and receive email.
